GST rates changed on 22 September 2025 (GST 2.0): the main slabs are now 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%, and most goods that were taxed at 12% or 28% moved to 5% or 18%. This article still describes the old slabs and is being updated. For current rates, use the HSN code finder at billbabu.com/tools/hsn-code-finder. See current GST rates

Practical negotiation tactics to push out supplier payment terms, pull in customer terms, and use early-pay discounts to manage working capital.

Why Payment Terms Are Pricing in Disguise

A Net 30 versus Net 60 difference on a Rs 50 lakh annual spend at 12% cost of capital is worth Rs 50,000 a year, the same as a 1% price cut. Yet most buyers and sellers negotiate hard on unit price and barely look at payment terms, leaving real money on the table. Reframing terms as cash-flow pricing helps both sides see the trade-off cleanly. Senior procurement teams already think this way, which is why your largest customer always negotiates 90-day terms while paying a premium on price.

Leverage on the Supplier Side

The strongest lever to push supplier terms from Net 30 to Net 60 is purchase volume concentration, where you commit a higher share of your annual spend in exchange for longer terms. Multi-year commitments, payment reliability data, and being a marquee logo in their portfolio also work. Smaller suppliers may resist due to their own working capital constraints, in which case offering them invoice discounting through your bank, where they get paid early but you settle on extended terms, can unlock the deal. Always anchor high and settle, asking for Net 90 to land at Net 60.

Pulling in Customer Terms

On the receivables side, push for advance plus milestone structure on project work, and Net 15 on standard service or recurring contracts. For customers insisting on Net 60 or 90, offer a structured early-pay discount, typically 2% for payment within 10 days against a stated Net 30, which translates to roughly 36% annualised yield for them and is hard to refuse. Make this discount conditional on cleared funds, not promise of payment, and document it in writing on the invoice. Track which customers consistently take the early-pay discount, they are your best credit risks.

MSMED Act Protection

If you are registered under the MSMED Act, you have a statutory right to payment within 45 days from the buyer, with delayed payment attracting interest at three times the bank rate compounded monthly. Buyers above a specified turnover must report dues to MSMEs over 45 days in their financial statements, which creates real pressure. You can file a complaint with the MSME Samadhaan portal at no cost, and the matter goes to the local MSEFC for conciliation and arbitration. Simply quoting this remedy in your reminder emails often unlocks stuck payments without escalation.

Tracking Terms Without Spreadsheet Hell

Each customer and supplier can have different terms, discount rules, and reminder cadences, which quickly becomes unmanageable in a spreadsheet. BillBabu lets you set default terms per party, override on a specific invoice, and automatically calculate due dates and discount eligibility windows. The system can also fire scheduled reminders on day 7, 15, 30 and 45, freeing your team from chasing payments manually while giving you complete audit trail on what was sent when.
