What every GST invoice must show
Under Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, a tax invoice has to show:
- the supplier's name, address and GSTIN;
- an invoice number of up to 16 characters, unique for the financial year, and the date;
- the customer's name, address and GSTIN if they are registered;
- for an unregistered customer and a bill of ₹50,000 or more, their name, address and state;
- the HSN code of goods or SAC code of services, with a description, quantity and unit;
- the taxable value, the GST rate and the CGST, SGST or IGST amount;
- the place of supply (with the state name) for an other-state sale;
- whether tax is payable on reverse charge, and the supplier's signature.
HSN codes: a business with turnover up to ₹5 crore shows 4 digits on bills to registered customers; above ₹5 crore, 6 digits on every bill. This generator covers the fields above; add anything else your business needs, such as reverse charge, by hand.
Same state or other state? How the tool splits the tax
The place of supply is the customer's state: the tool takes it from the state you choose, or from the first two digits of the customer's GSTIN. If it is the same as your state, the GST is split into CGST and SGST, half each. If it is another state, the whole GST is IGST.
Example: ₹10,000 of goods at 18%. Same state: CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900. Other state: IGST ₹1,800. The total is ₹11,800 either way. Need the tax on one amount only? Use the GST calculator.
