Why Even Small Businesses Need a Plan
A business plan is not just for VC-backed startups — it is the document that forces you to think clearly about who your customer is, what you will sell, how you will deliver, and how you will make money. Banks ask for it during loan applications, landlords ask for it during commercial leases, and partners ask for it before joining. More importantly, the act of writing one surfaces assumptions and risks you would otherwise miss. A 2-page version is often more useful than a 40-page deck nobody reads.
The One-Pager Format
For most early-stage SMBs, a one-page plan is enough. Cover six sections: (1) Problem you solve, (2) Customer segment and size, (3) Product or service offering, (4) Pricing and revenue model, (5) Go-to-market and channels, and (6) Team and key milestones for 12 months. Each section should be 3-5 bullet points — total length under 500 words. The discipline of fitting it on one page forces clarity. Keep it as a living document and update quarterly.
Financial Projections That Actually Help
Build a 12-month monthly projection covering revenue (units x price by product), variable costs (COGS, payment gateway fees, shipping), fixed costs (rent, salaries, software, marketing), and resulting cash flow. Start conservatively — under-promise on revenue and over-estimate costs by 15-20%. Calculate three key numbers: break-even monthly revenue, runway (months of cash you have at current burn), and unit economics (gross margin per order or per customer). These three numbers tell you whether the business is viable.
Market Analysis and Operations
Market analysis does not need primary research — credible secondary sources like IBEF, RBI, CMIE, Statista, and industry association reports are enough for SMB plans. Estimate your Total Addressable Market (TAM), Serviceable Available Market (SAM), and Serviceable Obtainable Market (SOM) realistically. The operations section should answer: who delivers the product, what tools and infrastructure you need, what your daily workflow looks like, and what could go wrong. Include a basic risk register with mitigations.
Track Plan vs Actual with BillBabu
Writing a plan is step one — comparing actual performance against the plan every month is what actually changes outcomes. BillBabu gives you monthly sales reports, gross margin by product, and customer-level revenue contribution, all exportable to Excel. Pair these with your one-page plan in a simple Plan vs Actual sheet, and review variance each month. This habit alone separates SMBs that grow methodically from those that drift.
