What Invoice Discounting Means
Invoice discounting is a financing arrangement where you sell an unpaid B2B invoice to a financier at a discount and receive cash within 24-48 hours instead of waiting 60-90 days for the customer to pay. The financier collects the full invoice amount on the due date directly from your customer and earns the difference as their fee. Unlike a loan, this is not debt on your balance sheet; it is the sale of a receivable. The MSME and exporter sectors in India use this heavily to bridge the gap between supply and payment.
TReDS: The RBI-Regulated Platform
The Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS) is an RBI-authorized electronic platform operated by three exchanges — M1xchange, RXIL, and Invoicemart. MSMEs upload invoices raised on corporate buyers, banks and NBFCs bid to finance them in a transparent reverse auction, and the MSME receives funds at the best discount rate. Companies with turnover above Rs. 500 crore are mandated under the MSME Act to onboard onto TReDS so MSME suppliers can access cheap financing. Typical discount rates range from 0.6% to 1.2% per month, far lower than unsecured lending.
Private Platforms Like KredX
Beyond TReDS, private platforms like KredX and CredAble offer invoice discounting against blue-chip buyer invoices, typically at 1.5-3% per month. These platforms target SMEs not yet on TReDS or invoices from non-corporate buyers. The process is faster than TReDS but at higher cost. Many startups and growing service businesses use a mix of TReDS for large enterprise customers and KredX for mid-market customers, choosing per-invoice based on rate and timing.
Things to Check Before Discounting
Read the recourse clause carefully — "with recourse" means if the buyer doesn't pay, the financier comes back to you, while "without recourse" places credit risk on the financier. Confirm whether the buyer needs to acknowledge the assignment of receivables (most B2B contracts require this). Check the impact on customer relationships; some buyers see invoice discounting as a sign of cash strain. Finally, factor the discount cost into your pricing strategy so it doesn't silently erode margins.
Tracking Discounted Invoices in BillBabu
BillBabu lets you mark an invoice as "discounted" with the platform name, discount rate, financed amount, and expected settlement date. The system shows your true cash position separately from outstanding receivables and adjusts the customer ledger when the financier settles on due date. For MSMEs juggling 5-10 large customer invoices monthly, this view replaces the messy spreadsheets that financing decisions usually live in.
