Understanding the Four Rails
India runs four mainstream digital payment rails, each governed by the RBI and NPCI with distinct settlement mechanics. NEFT operates in half-hourly batches around the clock, RTGS settles each transaction in real time gross mode, IMPS uses NPCI switching for instant 24x7 transfers, and UPI sits on top of IMPS with a virtual ID layer. Knowing which rail your bank uses for each transaction type prevents delays, especially around vendor payouts and salary credits. A wrong choice can mean a salary hitting accounts a full business day late.
Transaction Limits That Matter
UPI has a standard per-transaction limit of Rs 1 lakh, though specific use cases like capital markets, insurance and tax payments allow up to Rs 5 lakh. RTGS requires a minimum of Rs 2 lakh per transaction with no upper ceiling, making it the default for large supplier and capex payments. NEFT has no minimum and no maximum at the central level, but individual banks impose their own caps, typically Rs 10 lakh to 25 lakh online. IMPS allows up to Rs 5 lakh per transaction since the October 2021 revision, bridging the gap between UPI and RTGS.
Speed, Charges and Working Hours
RTGS and IMPS credit the beneficiary in seconds, while NEFT can take up to 30 minutes for the next batch to clear. UPI and IMPS are charge-free for customers in nearly all retail use cases, NEFT is also free for online transactions per RBI mandate, but RTGS attracts a fee of Rs 25 to 50 per outward transaction at most banks. All four now operate 24x7x365 after the RBI extended NEFT and RTGS to round-the-clock availability in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Holiday and weekend processing can still face occasional delays on the beneficiary banks credit side.
Choosing the Right Rail by Scenario
For invoice settlements above Rs 2 lakh between businesses, RTGS gives you a same-second irrevocable credit, which suits high-value B2B payments. For salaries and vendor batches below Rs 1 lakh per beneficiary, NEFT bulk uploads cost nothing and settle within an hour. UPI is unbeatable for retail collections, customer refunds and field-staff reimbursements thanks to QR and VPA simplicity. IMPS becomes the fallback when you need instant credit for amounts between 1 and 5 lakh and the recipient cannot share a UPI ID.
Tracking Every Rail in One Ledger
Most small businesses receive money across all four rails on the same day, which makes reconciliation painful if entries stay scattered across bank statements and screenshots. BillBabu lets you record collections against invoices regardless of rail, capture UTR or UPI reference numbers, and run a single daily report that ties every credit to an invoice. That single source of truth is what turns payment chaos into clean accounting and faster GST filing.
