# NACH Mandate for Recurring Payments: A Practical Setup Guide

By BillBabu Team · Published 16 May 2026 · Updated 8 October 2026 · Category: Payments

Set up NACH mandates for recurring payments in India, choosing between e-NACH and paper, and understanding the 0.5 to 1 percent processing fee structure.

## What NACH Solves

National Automated Clearing House, or NACH, is the NPCI-operated system that lets businesses debit customer bank accounts on a recurring basis based on a pre-registered mandate. It replaced the older ECS system in 2016 and now powers most loan EMIs, insurance premiums, SIPs, utility bills and SaaS subscriptions in India. Without NACH, collecting recurring payments requires the customer to manually pay each time, leading to 30% to 50% drop-off on subscription products. The mandate is the legal authorisation that lets the merchants bank pull funds without further customer action.

## Paper Mandate vs e-NACH

A paper NACH mandate involves the customer filling a physical form with their bank details, account holders name and signature, which then goes through a 10 to 21 day verification cycle with the customers bank. e-NACH replaces this with an electronic authentication using net banking credentials, debit card details, or Aadhaar OTP, completing in under 5 minutes. e-NACH is the default choice today for any digital onboarding, with paper NACH surviving only in offline channels like loan agent collections. Both have the same legal validity once registered with NPCI.

## Setting It Up via Aggregators

Razorpay, Cashfree, BillDesk and PayU all offer NACH mandate registration and recurring debit as a service, sparing you from direct integration with NPCI and 40 plus sponsor banks. Typical pricing is a one-time mandate registration fee of Rs 25 to 50, plus a transaction fee of 0.5% to 1% on each successful debit, with no charge on failed debits. Razorpay also offers a no-cost UPI Autopay alternative for amounts up to Rs 15,000 per debit, which is now the cheapest option for low-ticket subscriptions. Pick the rail based on your average ticket size and customer profile.

## Failure Handling and Customer Communication

NACH debits can fail due to insufficient funds, mandate not active, account closed, or technical issues at the sponsor bank, with success rates typically between 70% and 90% on first attempt. Your retry logic should attempt a second debit 3 to 5 days after first failure, escalate to a payment link reminder after second failure, and pause the subscription after third failure. RBI requires 24-hour advance notification to the customer before each NACH debit, which the aggregator usually handles via SMS or email. Failing to send this notification can lead to mandate revocation.

## Connecting Mandates to Invoices

A common gap is treating NACH debits as standalone payments rather than tying them to specific invoices, which breaks GST compliance for subscription businesses. BillBabu lets you auto-generate a tax invoice for each successful recurring debit, mark the invoice paid against the mandate, and produce the receipt voucher for any advance scenarios. That closes the loop between recurring collection and statutory invoicing, which manual workflows almost always get wrong.
